Ceramic Inlays and Onlays
Dental inlays and onlays are used to restore the damaged or decayed biting surface of a tooth particularly when a cavity is too large to restore adequately with a conventional filling.
They are generally larger than fillings and provide more protection for parts of a tooth that may be vulnerable to breakage in the future, but they are smaller than crowns and so preserve more of the valuable natural tooth structure.
Inlays and onlays are usually made from porcelain, composite resin or even gold.
Dental inlays
They are similar in design to larger fillings, lying within the biting surface of a tooth.
They are individually made to match your tooth in the dental laboratory and are then cemented into place.
Dental onlays
They are a more extensive restoration that is used to treat decay/damage that extends over one or more of cusps(corners) of the tooth.
They preserve greater amounts of healthy tooth structure compared to the placement of a crown as they require less removal of the tooth’s surface during their preparation.
