Crowns

Overview of Crowns

A crown is an artificial restoration that fits over the remaining part of a prepared tooth, making it strong and giving it the shape of a natural tooth.

A crown is sometimes known as a ‘cap’.

They can be made of porcelain, ceramics or gold or a combination of these materials.

Is a Crown the Right Solution for my Tooth?

Crowns are an ideal restoration for

  • a fractured or cracked tooth.
  • a tooth that is decayed and has cavities that can cause painful toothaches
  • or has an old, large filling that may leave it susceptible to further damage.

To protect the remaining tooth structure as well as the pulp/nerve of the tooth we will cover such teeth with crowns .

Our all-ceramic crowns will guard your teeth against further damage while also restoring their beauty.

In fact, all- ceramic crowns are one of the most aesthetically pleasing options for repairing damaged teeth.

A dental crown could be used for a number of other reasons, for instance:

  • you may have discoloured fillings or teeth and would like to improve the appearance of the tooth
  • misaligned teeth can often be given the appearance of being straight with crowns
  • you may have had a root filling which will need a crown to protect it
  • it may help hold a bridge or denture firmly in place.

Placing Porcelain Crowns: The Procedure

Placing porcelain crowns will normally take two visits to our practice .

During the first visit, your dentist will remove any decayed tooth material and reshape the tooth to accept the crown. Then a dental impression will be taken of it from which the laboratory technician will construct the crown.

Afterwards,we will make and place a custom made temporary crown over it. The acrylic temporary crown will ensure that the prepared tooth is protected and the underlying tooth doesn’t move whilst the permanent crown is being made for you.

When your crowns are made and ready to be placed, you will again visit our practice. We will remove the temporary crowns and replace them with the permanent ones. Before cementing them in place, the dentist will check to make sure the shapes and colours of your new crowns are consistent with your surrounding teeth.

After undergoing this treatment, not only will your bite be stronger and healthier, but also the appearance of your smile will be improved.

At Rosehill Dental Practice, ceramic crowns are not the only options for aesthetically restoring broken, cracked, or misaligned teeth. We also offer tooth coloured fillings and inlays, bridges, and porcelain veneers as options for repairing damaged teeth
