Dental Bridges
Overview of Bridges
A bridge is a fixed or removable device that replaces one or several missing teeth.
Besides having dental implants, there are two main ways to replace missing teeth. The first is with a removable false tooth or teeth – a partial denture. The second is with a fixed bridge.
A dental bridge is usually used where there are fewer teeth to replace, or when the missing teeth are only on one side of the mouth. There are two main types of bridge, conventional and adhesive bridges, each with their own merits.
If the bridge will show, porcelain is then bonded to the visible areas.
Missing teeth should be replaced for a number of reasons.
Your appearance is one reason.
Another is that the gap left by a missing tooth can mean greater strain is put on the teeth at either side.
A gap can also mean your ‘bite’ is affected, because the teeth next to the space can lean into the gap and alter the way the upper and lower teeth bite together. This can then lead to food getting packed into the gap, which causes both decay and gum disease.
Conventional bridges are retained by supports (abutments) similarly shaped to dental crowns.
Adhesive Bridge are bonded to the tooth surface. They require less tooth removal and are less damaging to the supporting tooth than a standard bridge but it can be less strong and more prone to debonding. Speak to your dentist to discuss your options.
Placing Bridges: The Procedure
A bridge will use the teeth either side of the gap as supports to anchor onto.
It will only be possible if the teeth supporting the bridge are strong enough and if they have good bone support.
The teeth either side of the gap are prepared, crowns are placed over the prepared teeth and these are attached to the artificial tooth (also called a pontic).
Placing bridgework will normally take two or three visits to our practice depending upon the complexity of your problem.
During the first visit, your dentist will remove any decayed tooth material and reshape the teeth to be used as supports for your bridge. Then a dental impression will be taken of it from which the laboratory technician will construct the crown.
Afterwards,we will make and place a custom made temporary bridge to cover it. The acrylic temporary bridge will ensure that the prepared teeth are protected and the underlying teeth don’t move whilst the permanent bridge is being made for you.
When your bridge has been made and is ready to be placed, you will again visit our practice. We will remove the temporary bridge and replaceit with the permanent one. Before cementing it in place, the dentist will check to make sure the shapes and colours of your new bridge is consistent with your surrounding teeth.
After undergoing this treatment, not only will your bite be stronger and healthier, but also the appearance of your smile will be improved.
