We Want Teeth Whitening to be Safe for You

It is essential that the teeth and gums are assessed prior to ANY whitening as whilst whitening tooth enamel is safe, damage can be done if the products come in contact with cavities, areas of gum recession, gum problems or some types of pre-existing dental restorations.

All our products are by the prescription of a qualified dental professional only and are proven to be effective in suitable cases.

Caution

We advise caution with over-the-counter products and great caution with any products bought over the internet. There have been many cases of these chemicals being unsafe and causing irreparable damage.

The General Dental Council have successfully prosecuted at least one beautician for conducting tooth whitening. Keep your smile safe!

What is Tooth Whitening?

Our teeth get darker as we get older.
Teeth are also stained by the foods and drinks we consume.
Smoking further stains teeth and the natural bright, white shade becomes darkened.
Some people have naturally greyer teeth.
Staining within hairline cracks in the enamel or shade variations on the enamel surface due to problems during the enamel formation.
These are all common reasons why people are not happy and confident in their dental appearance and why they choose to have the colour of their teeth improved with dental whitening.

Teeth whitening is an effective method of lightening the colour of your teeth, without damaging the tooth surface.
The degree of whiteness achieved will vary from patient to patient and with the type of whitening process chosen.
Your teeth will not turn completely white – the original shade is whitened to a lighter shade.

What’s involved in Professional tooth whitening ?

Your dentist will assess you first.
This is to be certain that tooth whitening is a suitable procedure for you.
We will discuss your options for tooth whitening and help you choose the most suitable option for your mouth.

There are three options you can choose.
We use Philips Zoom whitening products for your treatments. The most widely used and documented whitening agent in the world.

Option 1 – In surgery Whitening

Zoom in-surgery whitening is both safe and fast acting. For the majority of people the procedure takes only an hour or so.

Teeth will generally lighten by six to ten shades and often more. They will also often continue to lighten iver the next two to three days.

The lips and gums are protected by a rubber paste and sheet.
The Zoom light activated gel (a pH balanced 6% hydrogen peroxide gel) is applied to the teeth to be whitened, this is then activated by the Zoom! light, oxygen is released that gently penetrates the teeth to remove deep stains and discolouration.

Option 2 – Patient Applied At Home Whitening

We again use Zoom products.
However you apply the gel at home for upto an hour a day. For typically one to four weeks to give a result similar to the in surgery whitening.

We take impressions of your teeth and have custom made whitening trays made for you. These are thin plastic gum shields that fit snugly around the teeth.
We then instruct you in how to apply the gels into the trays which you then place around the teeth for the prescribed amount of time.

Option 3 – Combined in surgery and at home whitening

Many of our patients who are wanting the most improvement in the colour of their teeth choose to do a combination of the in surgery whitening to get an initial improvement in the colour and then follow this up a home to take the teeth as light as they wish.
They can also use the at home trays to “top up” at a later date simply by applying more gel at home.

FAQ’s

Why do you use Zoom?

It is the most widely used and documented whitening agent in the world.Being supplied by Philips it is a supplier that we can trustto be safe and effective.
The gel is combined with a pH booster and like all Zoom! products, also contains Amorphous Calcium Phosphate (ACP), which reduces sensitivity, protects enamel and helps improve the lustre of the teeth, whilst added fluoride helps to reduce tooth decay.

Side Effects?

The only side effect of tooth whitening can be sensitivity.
This is generally only short lived and is much less common with the ACP in the product.

Fillings and Crowns?

Whitening only affects natural tooth colour.Dental restorations will stay the same colour and you may wish to have them changed after whitening to match the lighter colour of your teeth.

Over the counter products?

We would advise that they are risky and a waste of money.

For teeth whitening toothpastes to really change your tooth colour they would need to be in contact with your teeth for a minimum of 15 minutes. This is never going happen during the brushing process.
Some “cosmetic” teeth whitening toothpastes can even permanently damage your teeth as they contain acids or abrasives.

Whitening kits that are purchased over-the-counter or by mail order, whilst inexpensive, normally contain a very acidic rinse that can severely damage teeth and gums. Like any medical intervention that involves part of your body, it is safest when a health professional supervises the treatment.

Finally since October 2012, products containing or releasing more than 0.1% and up to 6% hydrogen peroxide (or other compounds or mixtures that release hydrogen peroxide) must legally only be supplied by dental professionals.
