                               November 2011 Newsletter
No Mouth Is An Island……              Jenny our newest dental nurse was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes recently. She said it was OK to write about this because she wanted everyone to know how little information was given to her on how her diabetes would affect her oral health. Dentists are regularly reminded to treat the whole person, not just the teeth because research has shown that many general health issues and dental problems are interlinked. For example:
Heart disease – People with gum disease are almost twice as likely to have coronary artery disease than people without gum disease.Strokes  – Several studies have found that people who have had a stroke are more likely to have gum disease and lose their teeth than people who have not had a stroke.

Diabetes– People with diabetes are more likely to have gum disease
than people without it and if you have diabetes, you have an increased risk of losing teeth.

Many prescription drugs – cause a dry mouth which in turn leads to rampant decay and tooth loss.

Many medications cause the gums to swell and bleed excessively.

Pregnancy – those with gum disease are more likely to have low birth weight babies

People with hip, knee and heart valve replacements are at greater risk of their treatment failing if they have untreated gum disease.

Dental care should not just be about pain relief or mending broken teeth. Our philosophy is that it should be about working with you in partnership to achieve long term dental health, and in turn reducing risks to your general health.

If you fall into any of the high risk groups such as having a joint replacement, diabetes, heart disease or heart medication it is  essential that you let us know and look after your dental health.

Those on our dental plan already benefit from regular 6 monthly hygiene appointments to help them fight gum disease and also cancer screening with the dentists. Call us to see how we can help you further and let’s see if we can make 2012 our healthiest year yet.

Warm regards
Julie

Does you life lack lustre?

Do you have an annoying brown or white mark on a front tooth?

This is probably due to the enamel surface not forming correctly. Enamel can malform for a number of reasons:

  • Trauma to a baby tooth whilst young which affected the developing adult tooth
  • Recurrent abscesses around a baby tooth affecting the unerupted adult tooth
  • Serious illness when young which causes prolonged fever such as scarlet fever
  • Hereditary conditions which cause the enamel not to form correctly
  • Excessive fluoride consumption.as a child
Over the summer I have been trialling a product from the USA called Opalustre with promising results

Opalustre promotional photos showing the achieved using Opalustre paste
and a 21 days at-home whitening system
It is designed to help with superficial demineralisation affecting a small number of teeth
It can’t help every situation- severe cases will still need the fault to be covered manually by a filling, veneer or crown– but it certainly has it’s uses.
The best bit is that it just involves some polishing with a special acidic paste and some time with me in the practice.
So, if you have an annoying white or brown area on your tooth (that’s not decay!) then this product could help.

We currently have Opalustre on an introductory promotion of only £30 for a 20 minute session* . If you think it could help you, then let us know.

*whitening extra but not essential
