January 2012 Newsletter

January News

Welcome and a very happy new year to you all. As I write this it is also the Chinese new year so can I also say "Kung Hei Fat Choy"!

Both Stephen and I are ‘ Dragons’ and as we are entering a Dragon year it is supposed to be particularly auspicious for us. I hope it is for you too.

Well there has been no post Christmas slump at the practice with lots going on.
Jodie has completed her radiography course work and exam and we are delighted to say she passed with flying colours. We are very proud of her achievement and expect to keep her busy taking exposures for us from now on.

We have held the first practice meeting of 2012 which is always exciting as we get to set aims and make plans for the coming year. More of that to follow in time. ( I like to keep my powder dry as they say)

We’ve also held our first practice training session and had a guest speaker representing an Australian company and, it’s fair to say, we found his whitening system particularly exciting. So much so, we are launching the Pola Home Whitening system to our patients this month.

We love it because it means no more wearing the trays overnight. A full in depth product review is provided on our website so why not take a look to see why we think it is so special.  https://rosehilldentalpractice.co.uk/treatments/pola-white-home-whitening-system

Earlier this month we finally got around to our practice Christmas party. So , if you’d like to see the team in their ‘civvies’ and having a boogie, check out our   towards the end of the month. That’s if we can find any suitable ones to show!

Other than that, it’s heads down and time to refocus our efforts until Spring arrives. Let’s hope it’s soon.

Warm regards

Julie

Super saliva to the rescue!

According to the American Dental Association, the average person
produces over 6000 gallons of saliva (spit) in a lifetime-that’s enough
to nearly fill a swimming pool!

So why do we need saliva?
Well, first of all, it’s the first step in the process of digesting
food. It mixes with food while chewing and helps to break it down.
Saliva also acts as a lubricant to help the food slide down the throat,
into the eosophagus and down into the stomach.

Saliva is also very important for teeth and also gum health. However, aging and certain medications can cause the saliva glands to not work as well over time. This can lead to a feeling of a dry mouth. And when the mouth is dry, it’s easier for food to cling to teeth and the bacteria in the mouth to cause cavities.

Mild suffers of a (also called Xerostomia) could consider the use of sugar free chewing gum after food. According to research, chewing sugar-free gum helps to protect your teeth by:

  • Stimulating flow of saliva in the mouth 1
  • Cleaning the mouth of food debris 2,3
  • Relieving dry mouth discomfort 1,3
  • Neutralizing plaque acids that form in the mouth after eating fermentable carbohydrates 2,4,5
  • Helping to re mineralize enamel to strengthen teeth 6,7
  • Helping to reduce plaque levels1,3
For severe suffers we can also provide specialist products such as artificial saliva, toothpastes and mouthrinses especially formulated to be gentle and have a neutral PH to fight acid attack.

If you suffer do let us know. We are here to help.
